Research Publication / Writing Project, 2026
Open Scores for Body and Ice is a research publication developed from Phase Inversion, a practice-based choreographic research project exploring encounters between the body and ice.
Rather than documenting the research as a completed process, the publication asks how embodied research can remain accessible after the physical encounter has ended.
During the research, bodily sensations, environmental conditions, movement responses, observations, images, and traces were accumulated through repeated encounters with ice. These materials are reorganized into a series of open scores—instructions, observations, questions, and conditions that can be revisited and potentially reactivated by another body.
The publication therefore does not attempt to reproduce the original encounter. The temperature of ice, its weight, instability, melting process, and the body's immediate responses cannot be fully preserved through documentation. Instead, the book considers what can remain after the encounter and how those traces might become conditions for another practice.
Writing, images, body logs, and research documentation operate not simply as records of what happened, but as materials for constructing new scores.
In this sense, the publication functions as both an archive and an active research tool: a structure through which the research can be revisited, interpreted, and extended beyond its original duration.
The score does not preserve the movement.
It preserves the conditions from which another movement might emerge.
